    Biography

After receiving his MD from UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School in 1998, Dr. Matthews completed his internship and residency in psychiatry at UC San Diego, and was Chief Resident at UC San Diego Outpatient Psychiatric Services in his final year of residency. He then completed formal research training in functional brain imaging in mood disorders in UCSD’s Fellowship in Biological Psychiatry and Neuroscience. He is currently Assistant Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at UC San Diego. Dr. Matthews is actively involved in the American Psychosomatic Society, and has served on several committees of this organization.

    Research Interests

Dr. Matthews uses fMRI to study the neural substrates involved in mood disorders. He has published several articles that describe the involvement of the anterior cingulate cortex in cognitive processing and autonomic nervous system regulation. Dr. Matthews has received early academic career funding to implement these paradigms in patients with current major depressive disorder. His current work involves using cognitive and emotional tasks during fMRI to probe the neural circuitry involved in major depression and related mood disorders.

    Clinical Focus

Dr. Matthews is a Staff Psychiatrist at VA San Diego Healthcare System where he is Chief of the Consultation Liaison Division of the VA Psychiatry Service. He also provides care for veterans in one of the VA’s outpatient mood clinics. Dr. Matthews is actively involved in teaching residents and medical students.

Altmetrics Details PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication.
