Dr. Patrick is an Emeritus Professor in the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and founded both the Center for Wireless and Population Health Systems and the Exercise & Physical Activity Resource Center in the Qualcomm Institute. He also founded the UCSD/SDSU Preventive Medicine Residency in 1984 and directed ('84-93) and co-directed ('93-2003) it for 20 years.

Dr. Patrick’s research has been supported by the NIH (NCI, NIDDK, NHLBI), the National Science Foundation, the CDC, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. including experience with clinical trials, formative research, survey methodology, novel measurement technologies, behavioral interventions, and information technology. He was PI of the PALMS Project, part of the behavioral measurement portfolio of the NIH Gene Environment Initiative; Public Health Innovation Lead for the NIH Mobile Data to Knowledge (MD2K) Center of Excellence in mobile health research; and Co-Chair of the Mobile Data Collection Planning Team for the 2015 NIH workshops on Building a Large US Cohort for Precision Medicine Research (now called the All of Us Study); Dr. Patrick’s efforts focused on coordinating multidisciplinary teams of engineers, software architects, experimental psychologists, physicians, health behavior experts and others to design and implement novel approaches to capture, store and analyze new types of data on previously under- or unstudied factors that contribute to individual, population, and/or public health outcomes.

Dr. Patrick was Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine from 1994-2013, leading it to become (by impact factor) the leading journal in public health in the US. He served on the Secretary's Council for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and six years on the Armed Forces Epidemiology Board. Most recently Dr. Patrick helped lead efforts to conceptualize and create the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Center for Health Innovation at UC San Diego Health.
