BiographyNeil M. Richtand, M.D., Ph.D. is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, and Chief of the Psychiatry Service at the VA San Diego Healthcare System. Dr. Richtand graduated with a B.A. in Biology from Carleton College, and received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He completed residency training in psychiatry and a fellowship in molecular neurobiology at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Richtand was a faculty member in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neuroscience, and attending psychiatrist at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center from 1994 through 2013. He directs a preclinical research program studying animal models of relevance to psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, drug dependence, and traumatic brain injury. He has also been involved in clinical research in antipsychotic medications and mood stabilizers.
