    Biography

Dr. Folsom is an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Family Medicine and Board Certified in both specialties. He completed his undergraduate degree in chemistry at UC San Diego, and then went to the Medical University of South Carolina for medical school. He competed a transitional internship at Mercy Hospital in San Diego, and then became the first resident of the UC San Diego Combined Family Medicine Psychiatry residency, which was a partnership between UC San Diego and Father Joe’s Village.

After graduating from residency, he did a 2-year research fellowship at UC San Diego and the San Diego VA, focusing on health services research and improving care for people who are homeless and mentally ill. This was followed by a NIMH-funded Research Career Development Award.

From 2008-2015 he was the Director of the UC San Diego Family Medicine Psychiatry Residency and the Medical Director of the clinic at Father Joes Village, where he provided both medical and psychiatric care for people who are homeless. Starting in 2011, he collaborated with Father Joe’s Villages on Project 25, a program for people who are homeless and extremely high utilizers of emergency health care. This program has been recognized as a national model for improving the care and lowering the health care costs for people who are chronically homeless and high utilizers of healthcare.

He was recognized as the Family Medicine Researcher of the year by the California Academy of Family Medicine in 2007, and won the UC San Diego Family Medicine Residency teaching award in 2011.

During 2013 to 2105 Dr. Folsom participated in the development of UCSD Department of Psychiatry’s Clinical Strategic Plan whose aim is to have a guiding blueprint toward establishing best practices in mental health services within the UCSD Healthcare System.

Dr. Folsom is a San Diego native, and when he is not working, he enjoys going to his kids’ sports events, sailing, and backpacking.
