Shira Goldenberg, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University, a Research Scientist with the Gender & Sexual Health Initiative of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, and an Assistant Adjunct Professor in the Division of Global Public Health. Dr. Goldenberg’s research aims to improve HIV prevention and care, sexual and reproductive health, and access to healthcare for marginalized populations, including migrants, sex workers, and women living with HIV. She is passionate about conducting community-based research on the social and structural factors shaping the health of marginalized populations to inform evidence-based interventions to mitigate health and social inequities, especially those related to HIV, sexual and reproductive health, and substance use. Using a mix of qualitative, epidemiological, and mixed-methods approaches, Dr. Goldenberg’s research largely focuses on the health, safety and human rights issues faced by sex workers and migrant women, who often experience intense barriers to health and wellbeing due to criminalization, stigma, social isolation, and language barriers. She is currently funded by a 5-year Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) New Investigator Award to inform prevention, treatment, and care for HIV, STIs, and viral hepatitis for marginalized migrant women in Canada and internationally. Dr. Goldenberg currently leads and collaborates on numerous Canadian and U.S.-funded projects addressing HIV, STIs, and human rights among marginalized women, including migrant, refugee and internally displaced women, sex workers, women living with HIV, and youth in Mexico, Guatemala, Uganda, and Canada. Her research has been supported by diverse funding sources including CIHR, the Public Health Agency of Canada, NIDA, and the UC Global Health Institute. Supported by a prestigious Fulbright award, Dr. Goldenberg’s training includes a PhD in Public Health (Global Health) from the University of California, San Diego and San Diego State University, as well as postdoctoral training in the Division of Global Public Health, the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, and the University of British Columbia Department of Medicine.
