Travis Nielsen earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2012 studying Chemistry and French Literature at the University of California Riverside, where he made the Dean's List throughout his attendance. He went on to earn his Doctorate of Philosophy degree in 2018 studying Medical Biology under the mentorship of Brad Spellberg, MD at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, where he was recognized with the university's highest honor, The Order of Arêté. Drs. Spellberg and Nielsen continue to collaborate on various projects, including translational research of non-traditional therapeutics for treating antimicrobial-resistant infections as well as commentating on a wide range of topics including antibodies and COVID immunity and the sustainable development of antibiotics.

Dr. Nielsen was awarded the prestigious Grant for Emerging Researchers/Clinicians Mentorship (G.E.R.M.) in 2020 by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, highlighting his efforts to expand antimicrobial stewardship to the outpatient setting under the guidance of Fritzie Albarillo, MD at the Stritch School of Medicine of Loyola University Chicago, where he graduated in 2023 with his MD and MPH degrees. The Illinois Department of Public Health invited them to present their research at the IDPH Summit on Antimicrobial Stewardship, which was recently published in the journal Antimicrobial Stewardship & Healthcare Epidemiology.

Community engagement and mentorship are among Dr. Nielsen's greatest passions. He was selected for The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, spotlighting his innovative efforts to provide preventive healthcare services to Spanish-speaking immigrant populations.

He is now in the Physician-Scientist Training Pathway at the University of California San Diego, where he is a post-graduate trainee in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.

Altmetrics Details PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication.
