CRCNS: US-Japan Research: A computational neuroscience approach to skill learning and transfer from visuo-haptic VR to the real-world
    NSF BCS-2011716Oct 15, 2020 - Aug 31, 2024
    Role: Principal Investigator
Description: The purpose of this research is to understand how the brain learns complex motor skills. The first aim is to develop a neurobehavioral model of complex skill learning using as a model the juggling of multiple balls, studied with modern methods of measuring brain activity and body movement in real time. The second aim studies ways of enhancing learning of complex motor skills through slow-motion practice using highly novel visuo-haptic VR. Understanding how the brain learns, and how we might develop training programs to accelerate such learning would be impactful not only for developing more efficient motor training programs, but also would be informative for medical doctors who works on motor disorder such as dystonia and gait disorders.
Large-scale nested studies of the impact of music on brain and behavioral development
    NIH R01AA028411Sep 15, 2019 - Aug 31, 2022
    Role: Principal Investigator
Description: This research aims to build a new understanding of the role that music plays in the developing brain and behavior, from improving cognition and school performance to leading to positive health outcomes. It will leverage data from groundbreaking very large scale longitudinal studies that are defining the growth curves of the human brain and behavior as it develops from childhood to adulthood. It promises breakthroughs in our understanding of how the many details of children's experience, among them learning to play a musical instrument, may help shape who they become.
NEA Research Laboratory on The Arts, Creativity, Cognition, and Learning
    NEA Jun 1, 2019 - May 31, 2023
    Role: Principal Investigator
Description: Grant establishing a national research center for the study of the impact of music on child development.
Science of Learning goes global: International community-building among SL-CNs and Australian Science of Learning Research Centre

SL-CN: Group Brain Dynamics in Learning Network
    NSF SMA-1540943Sep 15, 2015 - Aug 31, 2018
    Role: Principal Investigator
Description: The goal of this project is to develop and evaluate new techniques for studying the brain using networked EEG headsets in the ecological environment of the classroom.
Cortical network dynamics underlying cognitive control deficits in ADHD
    NIH R21MH105803Aug 1, 2015 - May 31, 2018
    Role: Co-Principal Investigator
Description: The goal of this project is to develop advanced quantitative methods to analyze EEG recordings in order to create a new map between brain and behavioral symptoms.
Collaborative Research: Brain mechanisms of rhythm perception: Testing the impact of the motor system on auditory perception
    NSF BCS-1460885Jun 1, 2015 - May 31, 2019
    Role: Principal Investigator
Description: Funding to develop a network diagram of brain networks involved in auditory temporal processing. Testing the hypothesis that the motor system plays a causal role in perception of auditory rhythms, by providing predictive signals. This will be tested using EEG measurements as well as by causally influencing the network using transcranial magnetic stimulation to test if transient deactivation of motor structures interferes with beat perception and auditory brain dynamics.

Altmetrics Details PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
