    18. 2012. 2011-2014 Neurosurgery Patient Safety Video This video, also known as the "UCSF Neurosurgery Operative Safety Video" (see video link above) or Culture of Safety Video or "time out" video, is an educational procedural training video viewed by all operating room staff, faculty and trainees prior to working in the UCSF operating rooms (can be viewed on U-Tube). Dr. Berger, Chief of Neurosurgery UCSF, and the recent president of the American Neurological Association, debuted this 10 min video to a national and international neurosurgery audience at their annual meeting in 2012. It depicts a multidisciplinary team from neurosurgery, anesthesia, nursing and neurophysiology preparing to execute an operation. I represented the Department of Anesthesia and functioned as a consultant, advisor and writer. My contribution of 90 hours involved: (1)creative design of the video (2)script writing (one half of the spoken and most of the written text), multiple edits (3)meetings (4)final filming, acting, production, and studio edits (5)research of procedures, conceptualization of checklists. The video is being used to implement behavioral change and improve patient safety. Behavioral change audits have been conducted and the results were presented in a poster at the Clinical Quality Week Symposium at UCSF in 2012(see abstracts). The concepts have now extended to a "Post-op Debrief" procedure after each case. The Patient Safety Committees are studying the effects of these 2 procedures on communication and error reduction in the operating rooms. .
