    Our laboratory discovered that antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are produced by mammalian skin and we continue in the discovery of mechanisms and functions of the human skin immune system and microbiome. The information from these basic investigations has been applied to uncovering previously unknown aspects of the pathophysiology of human diseases such as atopic dermatitis, rosacea, acne and psoriasis. Our investigations of the microbiome on human skin have also included some of the first successful human trials of bacteriotherapy for atopic dermatitis. In related work, we study how glycans influence innate immunity and microbial function.
