    Dr. Michael Madani is a cardiothoracic surgeon who specializes in pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE), heart and lung transplants, heart valve surgery, cardiac bypass, and surgery for treatment of heart failure. He was named 2006 Physician of the Year at the UC San Diego Medical Center in recognition of his dedication to his patients and the high rate of successful outcomes of his surgeries.

    Dr. Madani received his advanced fellowship training in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery here at UC San Diego. He is certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

    Dr. Madani is Professor and Chief of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery and Director of the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center - Surgery. He directs the Heart Failure Mechanical Assist Device and Heart Transplantation Program at UC San Diego. He is also Clinical Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in La Jolla.

    Under his leadership, the VA Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery has the highest success rate for cardiothoracic surgery of all VA medical centers in the United States. In 2004, Dr. Madani received the Health Care Provider of the Year Award by the California Veterans of Foreign Wars and was later nominated for the 2004 National Award.

    In the Heart Failure Mechanical Assist Device and Heart Transplantation Program at UC San Diego, Dr. Madani is part of a team of top experts in heart failure, electrophysiology, cardiac imaging and cardiothoracic surgery who care for patients who have advanced heart failure. Dr. Madani is an expert in the mechanical devices that can be implanted to assist the heart in patients who suffer from heart failure, as well as in heart and lung transplantation.

    Dr. Madani and Dr. Stuart Jamieson, Endowed Chair and Distinguished Professor of Surgery, are the two most experienced surgeons in the world in PTE. Their PTE program at UC San Diego is known throughout the world for its experience and its high rate of successful outcomes.

    Dr. Madani is also a specialist in off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery, which is a surgery performed without the use of a heart-lung machine. Known as “beating heart” bypass surgery, this procedure is associated with better surgical success and a shorter recovery time for high-risk patients.

    Dr. Madani contributes his surgical expertise and his time to programs that provide access to heart surgery for children and adults in other nations. In 2001, 2003, and 2004, he served as Invited Surgeon in the Variety Children’s Lifeline program at Roberto del Rio Children’s Hospital in Santiago, Chile. This year, he travels to Mexico and to Cambodia to perform heart surgeries and to train local surgeons in the latest techniques for safe and successful surgical procedures on the heart.

    In his research at UC San Diego, Dr. Madani collaborates with other researchers in Surgery/Cardiothoracic Surgery and in the Division of Cardiology in the UC San Diego Department of Medicine. He recently reported the results of a study of the use of Doppler tissue imaging (DTI) after operation with and without cardiopulmonary bypass, and outcomes of pulmonary endarterectomy for treating extreme thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. He is a co-investigator in a study of a drug treatment for patients who have chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. He is also an investigator in a United States multicenter study devoted to establishing and maintaining a data registry on acute myocardial infarction with profound cardiogenic shock supported with ventricular assist devices.

    Dr. Madani speaks both English and Persian.
