Overview Dr. Gary Vilke joined the UCSD faculty in 1996 after finishing his chief resident year with the UCSD Emergency Medicine residency. He is a Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine and serves in a number of administrative positions. Dr. Vilke is the Director for Custody Services at UCSD, responsible for the care of inmates at all seven San Diego Sheriff’s jails. Other administrative roles include being the former medical director for the County of San Diego EMS System, the previous Chair for the UCSD Patient Care and Peer Review Committee, and the former Chief of Staff at UCSD. He currently serves as the Medical Director for Risk Management for the UC San Diego Health and is Director for Clinical Research for the Department of Emergency Medicine. He also is the current President for the UCSD Academy of Clinician Scholars. Dr. Vilke’s research focus has been in the areas of tactical medicine (TASERs, Restraints, Neck Holds and Pepper Spray) and prehospital care and has published over 180 original articles and 50 book chapters, including authoring one procedure text book. He is on the editorial board for 4 major medical journals and reviews for 15 other journals. He is also an investigator in several large multi-center clinical trials funded in excess of $5,000,000 dollars by the National Institute of Health and the Department of Justice, including his role as Principal Investigator for San Diego’s Resuscitative Outcomes Consortium (ROC) site, a 10-year ongoing NIH funded study to study out of-hospital cardiac arrest and severe traumatic injury.
