    Dr. David Guss was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Brandeis University in 1972 and the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1976. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at UC San Diego in 1979 and became one of the founding members of the Department of Emergency Medicine that same year. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine. During his years in the Emergency Department he has served as the Medical Director of the EMS Training Institute from 1980 to 1991, the Medical Director of the Emergency Department from 1982 to 1994 and became the chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine in 1994. He was a senior examiner for the American Board of Emergency Medicine and an item writer for part III of the National Medical Board Examination. During his years at UC San Diego he has served as Chief of Staff of the UC San Diego Health and President of the Academy of Clinician Scholars. His academic interests have included imaging modalities in appendicitis, information technology in medicine and most recently novel applications of telemedicine in the Emergency Department. Dr. Guss retired in July 2013 but continues to work clinically in the ED and on various telemedicine projects
