Claire C. Bristow, PhD, MPH, MSc is an epidemiologist focused on prevention, diagnostics and genomics for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV. Dr. Bristow received a master’s degree in Global Health and Development from the Institute for Child Health at University College London. She completed her master’s in public health and PhD in epidemiology at University of California Los Angeles.

From 2009 – 2012, Dr. Bristow was a senior research associate for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control in the Division of Tuberculosis Elimination and the Global AIDS Program in South Africa. More recently, Dr. Bristow’s research focused on dual elimination of HIV and syphilis and she co-founded dualelimination.org. In this work, Dr. Bristow has conducted comprehensive evaluations of dual rapid tests for the simultaneous detection of HIV infection and syphilis. In addition, Dr. Bristow is committed to improving point-of-care diagnostics for other STIs as well as implementing multiplex molecular diagnostic approaches in global settings including Mexico, Haiti, Peru, Botswana and South Africa. Dr. Bristow authored a textbook chapter for the American Society for Microbiology Press Molecular Microbiology: Diagnostic Principles and Practice textbook entitled “Diagnostic Approaches to Genitourinary Tract Infections”.

A major global health threat is antibiotic resistance–when bacteria mutate so antibiotics no longer work in people who need them to treat infections. The emergence and spread of drug-resistant pathogens has accelerated and the therapeutic arsenal is shrinking. The speed with which these drugs are being lost far outpaces the development of replacement drugs. Dr. Bristow is now working to improve technology to detect antimicrobial resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae and ways to halt the epidemic of resistance. Over the past 75 years, Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections have become increasingly resistant to antimicrobial therapy: first to sulfa-based antibiotics, then penicillins, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones and now extended-spectrum cephalosporins. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified drug-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae as one of the top three urgent threats and it also fits into World Health Organization’s plan for addressing the crisis of antibacterial drug resistance. Gonococcal antimicrobial resistance surveillance remains sporadic, limited or even lacking in many regions worldwide. In 2016, Dr. Bristow was awarded a Fogarty-GloCal Fellowship to conduct research in Tijuana to better understand the spread of antibiotic resistance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae. In addition, she has been awarded research support that will be provided for different research aims that are complementary to that project from the UCSD Center for AIDS Research (CFAR). Dr. Bristow is also a co-investigator in the STAR Sexually Transmitted Infections Clinical Trials Group (CTG) funded by the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID) at the NIAID within the National Institutes of Health.
