Broadly, I am interested in the impact of individual and environmental risk factors on substance use and related high-risk behaviors across the lifespan. My primary research interest focuses on the onset, maintenance, and escalation of substance use in adolescence and young adulthood from a developmental psychopathology perspective. My current NIAAA grant examines cognitive factors and brain functioning associated with various levels of alcohol-tobacco co-use involvement among young adults. Clinically, I serve as director of the Substance Abuse/Mental Illness (SAMI) Clinic at the VA San Diego where I oversee the development, application, and teaching of integrated treatment approaches for veterans with co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders. As such, I have an overarching passion for enhancing our understanding and treatment of complex substance use comorbidities both as a researcher and clinician.
