      Biography

Michael Thomas received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Arizona State University in 2011. He completed predoctoral and postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Diego before joining the Department of Psychiatry as an Assistant Research Scientist in 2014. Dr. Thomas’ research is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and combines advanced psychometric and neuroimaging methodologies in the study of cognitive psychopathology. He is a licensed clinical psychologist and has maintained a volunteer appointment at the VA San Diego Healthcare System since 2012. Dr. Thomas is a member of the American Psychological Association and a consulting editor for Psychological Assessment.

      Research Interests

Dr. Thomas’ research interests include psychometrics, neuroimaging, and schizophrenia. He uses latent variable modeling—particularly factor analytic, item response theory, and Bayesian approaches—to develop, evaluate, and refine clinical and neuropsychological measures. Dr. Thomas is particularly interested in the development of computerized adaptive tests. His research is supported by the National Institute of Mental Health; this includes a 5-year Career Development Award that combines advanced psychometric and neuroimaging (functional MRI) methodologies to refine brain-behavior models of cognitive deficits in schizophrenia.

      Clinical Focus

Dr. Thomas’ clinical interests include personality and cognitive assessment, especially in populations with psychosis or dementia. He has worked in outpatient, inpatient, and forensic settings, as well as provided counseling to clients diagnosed with a wide range of psychiatric disorders.
