Originally from Springfield, Missouri, Dr. Marcella Bothwell received her MD from the University of Missouri in 1993. She interned with the University of Missouri Department of Surgery from 1993-1998, specializing in otolaryngology. From 1998-2000, she became a fellow at Washington University Department of Otolaryngology. She went on to become a Clinical Instructor at Washington University which led her the Boone Clinic as Medical Director. After four years at Boone Clinic, Marcella returned to the University of Missouri as Assistant Professor for both the otolaryngology and pediatric department.

Currently, Marcella resides in San Diego, CA (with her three dogs) as Clinical Instructor at the UC San Diego Medical School. She spends most of her time at Rady Children's Hospital as chair of the Pediatric Airway and Aerodigestive Team. She is also the president of the San Diego Academy of Otolaryngoglogy and secretary of the CA Society of Otolaryngology.

As Chair of the Pediatric Airway and Aero-Digestive team at Rady Children’s Hospital, Dr. Bothwell has expertise in children and infants with airway and aero-digestive disorders. While she sees children with complex medical and surgical problems, she also evaluate and treat children with:

      • Ear problems: hearing loss due to otitis media with effusion (OME) or fluid in the middle ear; recurrent acute otitis media (AOM) or ear infections.

      • Nose and sinus problems: runny nose or rhinitis, allergy, chronic rhino sinusitis or recurrent sinus infections, nasal septal deviation, nasal airway obstruction, or nasal masses or tumors.

      • Sleep disturbance and sleep apnea with tonsil or adenoid hypertrophy or enlargement.

      • Airway disorders: stridor or noisy breathing, laryngomalacia, subglottic stenosis or airway narrowing, vocal cord paralysis, gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) or extra esophageal reflux (EER).
