    Dr. Palmer received his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1992, and completed a clinical-research fellowship in neuropsychology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Neuropsychiatric Institute and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in 1992 through 1994. He subsequently completed an additional research fellowship in geriatric psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego), prior to joining the UC San Diego faculty in 1997.

    Dr. Palmer’s primary research interests include loneliness and social isolation among older people with serious mental illnesses, positive mental health in typical aging and among persons with serious mental illnesses, and empirical research on optimizing the informed consent process. He is also interested in compassion training, and the application of strengths-based interventions to address loneliness and psychological distress among older adults.
