Dr. Tapert's research addictive behaviors began during her undergraduate years at the University of Washington, where she worked for Dr. G. Alan Marlatt. Her interest in adolescence emerged in the SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology under the mentorship of Dr. Sandra A. Brown, focusing on neuropsychology and behavioral medicine. Her 1998 dissertation was on the reciprocal effects of neuropsychological functioning and substance use in youth. Following an APA clinical psychology internship at Brown University, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship at UC San Diego on functional magnetic resonance imaging under the mentorship of Dr. Gregory G. Brown.

Renowned for her work in neural consequences and risk factors associated with adolescent and young adult substance use, Dr. Tapert employs a range of methodologies including MRI, functional MRI, and diffusion tensor imaging, alongside neuropsychological testing. Her research critically examines adolescent brain development, highlighting sex differences. She has been awarded over 30 research grants, most from the National Institutes of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and has over 250 peer-reviewed publications. She is Co-Director and site PI of the National Consortium on Alcohol and NeuroDevelopment in Adolescence-Adulthood (NCANDA-A) and Associate Director and site PI of the groundbreaking Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study initiated in 2015.
Since 2019, Dr. Tapert has been Vice Chair of Academic Affairs for the UC San Diego Department of Psychiatry. She is a licensed clinical psychologist.
